Professor Tom Bourne

Professor Tom Bourne is Chair in Gynaecology at Imperial College London and Hon Consultant Gynaecologist at Queen Charlottes and Chelsea Hospital. He is also visiting Professor at KU Leuven Belgium. He is considered a national and international authority in all aspects of the clinical use of ultrasonography in gynaecology including early pregnancy problems, the assessment of ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and emergency gynecology and cancer diagnosis. His approach is to try and give patients a clear diagnosis using a “one stop” ultrasound based approach to his consultations.
His research interests include the diagnosis of ovarian and endometrial cancer, the management of complications in early pregnancy as well as the psychology of early pregnancy loss. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed academic papers, has an h-index of 80 and has been asked to speak at numerous meetings in the UK and abroad. He is President-Elect of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology. He sits on the steering committee of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) trial, is President of UK Association of Early Pregnancy Units and director of early pregnancy research at the Tommy’s national centre for miscarriage research in the UK. In 2015 he was awarded honorary fellowship of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and in 2016 honorary membership of Australasian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine. He is married to Vicky. His interests include sailing (Bembridge and Royal Solent SC), cricket (MCC and Armadillos), road cycling, the theatre, visual arts and cinema.
