Professional Profile

Mr Tolia graduated from Glasgow University and went on to complete the first part of his training in Ophthalmology there. After obtaining the FRCS in Ophthalmology from Edinburgh, he moved to Nottingham University’s Queens Medical Centre. He was appointed to his first Consultant post at Ysbyty Gwynedd in North Wales. He was able to gain experience in managing a wide range of ophthalmic diseases as well as train junior staff and carried out research into drugs for Glaucoma and Diabetes. One of these drugs (Trusopt) is now in use.
During this time he participated in and was the subject of several documentary films ranging from his charity work in India and pioneering laser refractive surgery. One of these, “From Darkness to Light” by HTV Wales won the Best Regional Documentary award of the Royal Television Society.
Mr Tolia moved to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital about 20 years ago and is now in Private practice.
Mr Jiten Tolia has over 30 years of experience as a consultant in Ophthalmology. He has carried out well over 20000 cataract procedures and a wide range of other eye operations. He has experience in using Botox to treat facial neurological problems as well as for squints. He ran the Botox service while an NHS consultant to treat problems such as facial tics and involuntary movements. That knowledge is extremely useful when dealing with other facial problems that require Botox injection.
Mr Tolia’s practice has evolved over the years to keep up with new developments and he firmly believes in treating the patient rather than just one aspect of a disease. The insight gained over many years as a general ophthalmologist is particularly useful.
Mr Tolia has run many teaching events over the years to train and improve the quality of care by GPs, Optometrists and students in addition to the normal ophthalmic trainees. These have been very well received because of the breakdown of complex problems into simple and clearly understood components.
