After medical schools in Syria and the United Kingdom, Ali completed his surgical training in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Great Ormond Street Hospitals before successfully completing the National Plastic Surgery Specialty Training as one of only 5 academic trainees in Plastic Surgery in London leading to the award of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Plast) and Certification of Completion of Specialty Training (CCT). He is on the General Medical Council specialist register in plastic surgery.
Ali has also completed his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology from University College London working on molecular regulation of embryonic stem cells. He is one of a handful of plastic reconstructive surgeons with stem cell biology qualifications worldwide and has internationally lectured on his research in this innovative and promising branch of modern medicine: regenerative surgery.
He is one of the pioneers in the introduction and development of a wide range of stem cell and growth factors based treatments in aesthetic reconstructive plastic surgery and regenerative medicine including injectable Platelet Rich Fibrin (iPRF) , adipose tissue derived stem cells (Nanofat), Tissue Regenerative Micrografts (Rigenera Activa) protocol to name a few.
He is also qualified in Surgical Science (MSc with Distinction – University College London) Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (MSc with Distinction – Queen Mary University of London), Microsurgery (PGDip with Distinction – Italian Society of Microsurgery) and Medical Law and Ethics (MPhil – School of Law, Glasgow University).
In addition to his UK training, Ali undertook international fellowships in Reconstructive Microsurgery (Seoul, South Korea) Aesthetic and Breast Reconstructive Surgery (Brussels, Belgium), Paediatric and Adult Maxillofacial Surgery (Paris, France & London, UK), Facial Aesthetic Surgery (Casablanca, Morocco & Miami USA) and Paediatric Plastic Surgery (Toronto, Canada).
During his international fellowships, he has worked with global experts in the field: Sam Hamra – Face Lift (Dallas Texas); Pierpaolo Rovatti – FaceTite (Verona Italy); Nasser Nasser & Fabio Ingallina – Rhinoplasty (London UK and Paris France); Moustapha Hamdi, Venkat Ramakrishnan, Nilesh Sojitra & Shadi Ghali – Aesthetic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery (Brussels Belgium, Chelmsford and London UK); Fahd Benslimane & Roger Khouri – Microfat Grafting and Regenerative Surgery (Casablanca Morocco and Miami USA); Ronald Zuker, Greg Borschel & Mohamed Shibu – Facial Paralysis and Paediatric Microsurgery (Toronto Canada and London UK), David Gault, Neil Bulstrode & David Fisher – Ear Reconstructive Surgery (London UK and Toronoto Canada) and Brian Sommerlad & David Fisher – Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery (London UK and Toronto Canada).
His academic work has been recognised by many prestigious prizes and awards such as The Arnold Huddard Medal of the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Education Excellence Innovation Award from London Deanery, visiting Professorships at Barcelona University, Spain and Cardarelli Biotechnology Centre in Naples, Italy. He was recently honored for significant contribution to aesthetic plastic surgery education by the Pan Arab Association of Burn and Plastic Surgery and the prestigious International Fellowship of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Ali also serves as a clinical senior lecturer in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Barts and at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry of the Queen Mary University of London where he is Course Lead of the Master Programmes in Aesthetic Medicine and Reconstructive Microsurgery. He is Consultant in Medical Education Development to the International Medical Education Trust (IMET 2000) and the Secretary of the International Microsurgery Simulation Society (IMSS).
