Sebaceous cysts are sacs just under the skin filled with an oily substance called sebum. They appear dome shaped with a smooth surface. There is no known cause for the cysts to prevent them from forming. They can vary in size between 1cm to 5cm across and mostly occur on the scalp, chest, back and genitalia. Sebaceous cysts are usually harmless but can become painful or infected especially when they are irritated.
We offer minor surgery, which involves removing or excising the cyst contents and sac. By removing the sac, this prevents the cyst from returning. This procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic and you should be able to return to work after your procedure.
