Screening at 9 Harley Street

Screening should start with a medical history, examination and basic tests such as blood pressure and analysing the urine. Our general practitioners are happy to undertake this consultation and you do not need to be registered with them.

9 Harley Street is also able to undertake a number of investigations which we believe can make a significant difference in identifying diseases early and allowing treatment to be simplified.

1. Virtual colonography. This uses CT imaging combined with sophisticated software to convert the CT images of the abdomen into a virtual picture of the colon. It is mostly used to identify small polyps within the bowel which can then be removed before they become malignant. VC can detect bowel cancer and allow treatment without open surgery. VC also visualises the pelvic organs including the uterus and ovaries in women, the major blood vessels including the aorta, as well as the liver and pancreas and therefore identify a wide range of other potential diseases at the same time.

2. Coronary Calcium Scoring. This is CT investigation identifies the presence or absence of calcium in the blood vessels supplying the heart. It helps define whether or not there is significant hardening and possible narrowing of the coronary arteries. A low score can be reassuring whereas a high score can indicate the need for further test or treatment.

3. Prostate mapping. If there is concern about the possibility of prostate cancer, our MRI is able to undertake prostate mapping which provides an accurate and precise image of the prostate to identify any potentially malignant areas. Increasingly this is recommended as the first test if prostate cancer is suspected

4. Full Cardiovascular Assessment. Our Cardiologists are able to offer the full range of cardiovascular investigations including ECG, Echocardiogram, 24 Hour blood pressure monitors and ambulatory heart rhythm monitors (24-hours-7 days) as well as cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. In addition screening for carotid artery hardening and abdominal aortic aneurysm are available. Your Cardiologist will advise on the most appropriate screening tests for a given individual.

5. We are happy to receive referrals from your consultant or general practitioner but if you would like to self-refer for screening please contact us for further information.
