Should You Have A Private Colposcopy?

When your doctor says your smear test needs further investigation, it can feel worrying. There may be a long time between hearing you need further investigation, and when the NHS can provide a colposcopy.

A private colposcopy could be the answer. This can put your mind your mind at rest, and if needs be, allows you to get any necessary treatment fast.

Why A Colposcopy Is Needed

If you’ve had an abnormal smear tests you will need a colposcopy to ensure any cell changes are not at risk of becoming cancerous. A Colposcopy is similar to a smear test, but it gives a far more detailed look at the cervical area. A specialist microscope is used to check for any signs of cell changes with a high-powered microscope. It is very important you don’t put off having your colposcopy, even if you feel fit and healthy.

Three women out 100,000 die from cervical cancer every year in the UK. Early diagnosis of cervical cancer can make all the difference.

DYSIS – The Most Accurate Colposcopy

DYSIS – Dynamic Spectral Imaging – has been shown to provide the most accurate and sensitive measurement when it comes to discovering cervical cell changes. A series of images are taken. These are then stored in a database which allows doctors to compare the results with other cervical cells and track any changes which may be cause for concern.

The DYSIS map and the documentation images give ultra- accurate results for doctors and patients.

Twenty-five Harley Street day clinic uses DYSIS technology as a matter of course, but wherever you get your colposcopy done, do check they are using the best technology available.

What Do I Need To Know About Having A Colposcopy?

Our doctors and gynaecological nurses will make sure you are made to feel comfortable. Colposcopies are performed in our state-of-the-art treatment rooms, and you can be certain you are in good hands.

As with a smear test, the speculum is inserted in to the vagina, and using a special liquid to highlight any abnormalities, the gynaecologist uses a light to examine the cervix.

A biopsy may be taken, but the skill of our doctors means there shouldn’t be too much discomfort. If you do feel anything it will be momentary. The biopsy is needed for checking and further analysis by the laboratory.

Do I Need To Prepare For A Colposcopy?

It’s best that you don’t book your colposcopy during your period. Mid-cycle – a fortnight from your last monthly period –  is the optimum time.

The Colposcopy Results

In some cases, the doctor will be able to give you treatment for abnormal cell changes in the consultation. However there may be a week or two to wait if you have had a biopsy. Four out of ten women won’t require further treatment, the remainder may require some kind of strategy for care, depending on the exact diagnosis – this may include laser treatment to treat the abnormal cells.
